Jil Sander, Maison Margiela, Celine, Comme des Garcons, Dries Van Noten – iconoclast heritage vs redefining; craftsmanship vs deconstruction; mystery vs modern elegance; conceptualism of modern art vs mundane Wednesday morning coffee - these have been my inspirations to delve into the fashion illustration. Fashion for me is a narrative of the human search for expression. History of awesomeness and confidence.
The exploration of fashion ways has to lead me from Riga to New York and back. I have investigated it in the Latvian Academy of Art, College of Design and Arts, NY art studios and workshops. And I continue to find my revelations in the daily street fashion, as well as on the heat of catwalks. The story keeps unveiling. And I indulge in the experience of narrating it.
I have found the means of narration through blending modern fashion illustration with figurative painting. To bring illustration to life I have dropped digital images in favor of the intuitive expression through hand-painting with coal, watercolor, and acrylic.
The static elegance of graphic elements, combined with vivid strokes of acrylic – my way of taking storyline to the center of it – the human. Strong through its vulnerability, delicate and approachable, jet isolated with the gaze fixed on the though outside the current frame.
Fashion Illustration for me is a synthesis of style, tale, emotion, and moment. A human story, personal yet shared, the story that I can rewrite with every painting.
